![]() ![]() ![]() On the basis of this research, I will conclude with a consideration of the advantages and pitfalls of Tillich's semiotics, evaluating the applicability of his theology of symbol in present-day cultural contexts. However, according to Rudolf Otto in The Idea of the Holy, these tendencies have created different dimensions of religion the rational and non-rational. By examining this particular theological construction, semiotics, the ramifications of the inherent methodological differences between Rahner and Tillich can be demonstrated, especially in identifying appropriate theological source material. The numinous conveys the idea of the holy or sacred, but Otto expands the traditional articulation to characterize these as a profound mystery. The numinous is sometimes referred to as an emotion but might better be described as apprehension. The methodological consequences will then be considered through an analysis of their respective conceptions of the symbol. Rudolf Otto is most well known for developing the concept of the numinous. I begin this paper with an introductory analysis and comparison of Tillich and Rahner's methodologies. ![]() Acknowledging and examining such distinctions will reveal central aspects of their respective theological suppositions. Many of these differences are the result of minor, though significant, methodological discrepancies between the two thinkers. The semiotics of Paul Tillich and Karl Rahner offer points of great coherence, but remain fundamentally distinct in certain regards. ![]()
